Born on 29 June 1972 in Moscow.

In 1995, Kapkov graduated from Mendeleev Russian University of Chemical Technology.

Since 1991, he has published multiple articles on cinema in newspapers and magazines; from 1995 to 1998, he worked at the Ekho Moskvy radio station. In 1998-2017, Kapkov worked on TV as an editor, chief editor, and presenter.

From 2017 to the present, he has worked as Chief Editor at Soyuzmultfilm Studio.

Initiator and artistic advisor of the Ikar National Animation Awards (since 2014).

One of the creators and chief editor of Animator.ru (since 2000), press attaché of the KROK International Animated Film Festival (2000-2018), member of the State Attestation Commission of Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography with a specialisation in directing animated films (since 2010).

Scriptwriter and director of concerts of the Russian State Symphony Cinema Orchestra (since 2011).

Author of These Different, Different Faces (Ety Raznye, Raznye Litsa), Comrade of His Highness (Tovarisch Ego Vysochestva), Kings of Comedy (Koroli Komedii), Character Actors (Epizodniki), Visiting a Tale (V gostyah u Skazki), Aleksandr Pilot Tatarsky, and other books, compiler of The Encyclopedia of Russian Animation.

Scriptwriter of approximately eighty documentary films and series, director of documentaries Pani Malkina, the Czech Ranevskaya (2008), Elena Driatskaya.
